Inspired by the love of bacon, this annual food holiday was founded in 1977 by college students Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard, who wanted to create a fun holiday based on a line from The Simpsons where Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?"
The term "bacon" derives from a Middle English word that referred to any kind of preserved pork; it has evolved to specifically denote the cured meat from the belly of pigs in modern usage.
In addition to a national Bacon Day in the USA on December 30, there is a Bacon Lovers Day on August 20 and an International Bacon Day on the Saturday before Labor Day.
Celebrate this food holiday by ordering bacon direct from the producer at a local market or from a favorite butcher. Order bacon when eating out or cook and eat at home.
